The Namesake

This movie is based on the book (same title) by Jhumpa Lahiri. It stars Kal Penn (that Whitecastle movie, and Superman). The book won a Pulitzer price and the story line does seem pretty good.

Doesn't the story line seem a little played out... maybe i'm getting the wrong picture, but a story about a guy who is lost and travels back to india to find his roots has been done so many times, no?.. maybe there's more to it than that... i guess i'd have to watch it to find out... i'll wait for it to come on dvd :)

btw, was it just me, or did Kal Penn not say a single word in the superman movie... haha...

I think he said "whoa" once. The rest of the time he was kicking Superman around and being a good henchman to Lex Luther. But c'mon, Superman is a big step for him.

The story does seem familiar, although it could very well be that people have copied the original book?

I don't think it was this book that won a Pulitzer prize, I think the author, Jhumpa Lahiri won for a book that she wrote before. But who knows, this one could have won something/could win something too!

I just finished reading the book and its not the same typical story about the lost guy going back to the homeland. It is typical in the sense where you have your traditional Indian family and your ABCD (American-born confused desi) kids and their story. That theme has been done a few times but in a different manner.

After reading the book I think I will watch the movie, since the trailer seems pretty close to the book, down to the dialogue. I didn't like the last quarter of the book as much but let'see how it does!! I heard it might be premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, so we'll keep watching!
